The name Austen can be seen on the Lighthouse dial at number 51, although there is some speculation as to whether the name is Kate's, as it is not signified by one of the Numbers. As far as Lapidus goes, if his name was crossed off before the return of the Ajira flight, as was Ben's, he still wouldn't have traveled back like my theory says.

Frank Lapidus was on the list of candidates in the cave, but his name was crossed out. I haven't seen Kate Austen on any of the lists.

This is also similar to what the Amish do. The children are allowed to go live in a modern world for a time so that if they CHOOSE to be Amish they have made an educated decision about it... Interesting to note how Jacob keeps telling everyone they have a choice... I think that's the big key here- The PLAYERS are manipulating the pieces based on what decision they predict them to make- Jacob knew Jack would break the lighthouse, is he trying to prevent someone from coming, or did breaking the mirror actually BRING the JACK the island needs to himself...

Nice, like the ideas presented here. I think you could further your argument for the symbiotic relationship between destiny and freewill by examining the Kierkegaard reference in LA X. One of the strongest points Kierkegaard heralds is the idea of faith being inherently dependent on skepticism; in other words, to fully appreciate one's destiny or fate, one must exercise freewill by thoroughly questioning their belief. A faith unexamined is empty and without merit. Again, these sentiments are symbolized throughout Lost by countless representations of mirror images: dark/light, good/evil, faith/science, destiny/freewill, life/death...none of which can truly exist without the other, they are defined by each other, they are of one.

There is also a difference in the fact that Lockes physical dead body is still on the Island and Christian shepherds was not, perhaps one entity can control the body and the other can only duplicate it...

I think that for whatever reason, MIB can only take over the bodies (or, I mean, imitate the bodies) of people whose bodies aren't buried. In other words, he can't take on the appearance of Juliet now, because she's "safely" buried. This may also be why MIB is "stuck" in John Locke's form now, because he was still in that form when he was buried, so now he can't go into another form?
